There’s an old joke that says everybody talks about the weather but nobody does anything about it. The weather up here has been very strange. Very little snow. We had the snirt Christmas and a few flurries after that. We have had lots of fog but the strange part is the warmth. It has been almost balmy. Weather reports continue to be popular and certain times of the day are set aside to listen to weather news. Now we are told to enjoy the warmth while we can because things will soon change.
It is hard to imagine that there was a time when there was not a National organization that took care of reporting the weather. There wasn’t for many years and weather forecasting was primitive and in some cases kind of silly. I’m reading a great book by Eric Larson called “Isaac’s Storm” that tells the story of the early days of forecasting the weather and the ominous lack of understanding hurricanes. The book explains the great Galveston hurricane is awful detail and makes for a great read.
In a time of censorship, and suppression of some information, it is interesting to note that.k those early forecasters banned the word “tornado” from their vocabulary in speaking to the public.because they thought it caused panic and hurt their reputation. So rather than tell folks a tornado might be in the way they refused to use the word.
For some reason this made me think of Jesus statement in Matthew – When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.” We know what is going with weather, but not with spiritual conditions in our world.
What is it about organizations that handle information, that the first impulse they have is to restrain it?
