A dear friend sent me a wonderful message of consolation and prayer which is appreciated very much. She included a verse from Psalm 118. Psalm 118 is one of my favorite Psalms and it was Martin Luther’s as well. I like to think of it as preachers Psalm but if course it is so much more than that. It is for everyone, everywhere. But this Psalm finishes “and [I shall] recount the deeds of the Lord.” That is what a preacher does. In season and out of season, and good times and in bad times, and preacher recounts the deeds of the Lord. He has nothing else, and nothing else makes any difference. He can boast if he wants to, but at the end he comes to the conclusion that all he can boast in is Christ and him crucified.
We learned from this song that we are in God’s hand, that every single breath we take is controlled by God, is in His in his care and controlled by his goodness . Luther would fill every moment of his life telling others about God’s goodness. He was not the most sanguine of men and often he was depressed and cranky. When he came from those moods he was apologetic and repentant and rejoiced in Christ and his mercy. Everyday brings a new surprise; some good some sad, but there is no surprise in the care of our God and the love of Christ,
