mothers

I always feel a little troubled on Mothers Day.  It is a tough Sunday for preachers.  I feel that I am being manipulated by florists and card makers.  I feel bad that we tend to get smarmy and sentimental on Mothers Day and then on Fathers Day we let the poor Dads have  it with both barrels, (at least I have done that).  I am reminded by my liturgical brothers that there is no setting for Mothers Day in the church but we ignore it at our peril.

What about women who aren’t or can’t be Mothers?  What about Mothers that have lost their children?  What about Mothers that haven’t been that Motherly, or Mothers that have lousy kids?

It is a time when I at least think about the difference between men and women because there is a difference despite what the world wants us to believe.  I have a respect for the vocations of women and this is one day at least when I sympathize with what they have to put up with when they deal with men.

Maybe a better verse for today would be

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.  Proverbs 31:30
