Wikipedia says, “This Land Is Your Land” is one of the United States’ most famous folk songs. Its lyrics were written by Woody Guthrie in 1940 based on an existing melody, in critical response to Irving Berlin‘s “God Bless America“, which Guthrie considered unrealistic and complacent. Tired of hearing Kate Smith sing it on the radio, he wrote a response originally called “God Blessed America”.
Lyrics have changed over the years but every so often it is bleated by some aged protracted adolescent that likes to tinker with political commentary.
As the autopsy goes on over the election at every level it is clear that we are basically Western Europe. We are no longer a Christian nation and it appears to some that we are not really religious in any sense. This ain’t your grandpas country. Maybe it is time for protracted adolescent aging baby boomers of a certain political persuasion to start singing it as well. So here is my offering.
