We’ve been talking about people turning in on themselves because of sickness, guilt, or fear, and how it is a hindrance to the full expression of joy and sometimes the death of joy itself. It is only the constant proclamation of Jesus announcement that we are free that can keep people In the broad sunlit open spaces of freedom and rejoicing. Jesus said if he made us free we are free indeed.
Today on the news there was a long segment concerning the fear and depression many are experiencing from not being able to speak their minds freely on all kinds of subjects that people deem to be political. One journalist who had filmed people cleaning up after riots and making their opinions known as to how stupid, destructive, and unhelpful these incidents were was publicly denigrated and privately threatened. She made an interesting statement about the impossibility of free argument and debate in our culture and in this climate. It reminded me of something Thomas Jefferson had written about truth .
………truth is great and will prevail if left to herself; that she is the proper and sufficient antagonist to error, and has nothing to fear from the conflict unless by human interposition disarmed of her natural weapons, free argument and debate; errors ceasing to be dangerous when it is permitted freely to contradict them”.
